Description of Spode Blue Italian Earthenware 7-Inch Mortar and PestleOne of the classic tableware patterns, Blue Italian has been in continuous production in England since 1816. Perfectly framed by the 18th Century Chinese border, the central scene of the Italian ruins from a late 17th Century drawing, each piece still requires the most skilled hand engraving to create its remarkable sense of space and style. The Blue Italian Mortar 7 inch and Pestle 5 inch is perfect for everyday use and will be cherished for years to come! Made in England of high-quality earthenware, Imperialware. Continuously produced in England since 1816, the Blue Italian pattern from Spode will easily find a home on a casual or more formal table. Utilizing an underglaze printing process created by Josiah Spode and still employed today, varying shades of blue and white make up the lovely design, adding a 3-dimensional depth to each piece. This Blue Italian mortar and pestle set is an essential addition to any gourmet kitchen and can be used to grind spices and herbs, make dips and spreads, or crush nuts and seeds. With a matte surface to aid in grinding, the 7-inch pestle has a classically rounded base and decorated handle. The weighted mortar measures 5 by 5-1/4 inches, stands 3-1/4 inches high, and contains a small lip in which to rest the pestle. Based upon a late 17th Century drawing, the central design decorating the outer bowl depicts classic Italian ruins in a pastoral setting, while an 18th Century Chinese-inspired floral motif trims the edges of each piece in the set. Crafted from Spode's high-quality earthenware, known as Imperialware, this set can safely be placed in the microwave or dishwasher. --Lea Werbel
