Description of Spode Blue Colonel 5-Piece Place Setting, Service for 1A Chinese ceramic design from the 15th century, Blue Colonel takes its name from Colonel Alfred Copeland, an amateur archeologist who excavated a fragment of this stunning pattern on the Silk Route in Persia in the 1870's. The Blue Colonel 5 Piece Place Setting - includes 1 Dinner Plate 10 inch, 1 Salad Plate 8 inch, 1 Bread and Butter Plate 6- 1/4 inch, 1 Teacup 7 ounce and Saucer 5- 1/4 inch When Colonel Alfred Copeland, an amateur archeologist with the British Army in the 1870s, excavated a piece of ancient Chinese porcelain in Persia, little did he know an enduringly popular dinnerware pattern would be named in his honor. Blue Colonel, inspired by the porcelain shard, shows a white ground covered with dainty royal blue chrysanthemums, the Chinese symbol of enduring friendship and happiness. Spode produces the pattern on the fresh and appealing fluted Chelsea shape, and trims each piece with gleaming 22-carat gold for a formal touch. Made in England of beautifully translucent fine bone china, this single place setting forms the start of a collection or adds to an existing one. Included are five pieces: a 10-1/2-inch dinner plate, 8-inch salad plate, 6-inch bread-and-butter plate, and 7-ounce teacup with matching saucer. A generous assortment of cups, bowls, and serving pieces completes a well-appointed table. While the gold trim precludes use in a microwave, the china may be washed in a dishwasher at low heat so as not to soften the metal. However, in order to best preserve the china's fine luster, the dinnerware should be washed by hand. --Ann Bieri What's in the Box 1 place setting.
